Ductwork and services at ceiling level in a live commercial building
Fire Stopping Service

Duct Penetration Fire Stopping Manchester

Ductwork passing through a compartment wall or floor leaves a large opening that has to be sealed without compromising the duct or the compartment. We fire stop around ventilation and services ducts so the compartment line is maintained where the duct passes through.

The challenge with ducts

Ducts create some of the biggest openings in a compartment wall, and the gap around them is often left until the ductwork is fully installed and supported. That means large, awkward penetrations high in the ceiling void that are easy to defer and then forget.

The sealing detail also has to suit the duct — the opening around it must be closed to the tested system while allowing for the duct construction. This is separate from any fire damper within the duct itself, and both need to be right for the compartmentation to hold.

What we handle

Ventilation and services ductwork through fire-rated walls and floors
Large rectangular and circular duct openings
Batt and coating systems around the duct penetration
Sealing coordinated with installed ductwork and supports
Penetrations in ceiling voids and risers
Mixed openings where ducts run alongside other services

How we work

1

Record the openings

We measure the duct penetrations and the surrounding construction to select the right system.

2

Tested detail install

Batt and coating systems are installed around the duct to the manufacturer’s tested specification for that opening.

3

Access & coordination

We coordinate with the mechanical contractor and work safely at height in ceiling voids.

4

Records on completion

Photographic records are available on request for your fire safety file.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our focus is the fire stopping of the opening around the duct so the compartment line is maintained. Tell us the full scope when you enquire and we will confirm what we can cover on your project.

Yes. Duct penetrations are usually high in the ceiling void and we work safely at height, coordinating access with other trades.

Yes — retro-fit sealing around installed and supported ductwork is common, and we select a system that suits the opening and the duct.

Seal your duct penetrations before handover

Send us drawings or photos of the duct routes and openings and we will price the fire stopping.
